 Cumberland

About

Boasting 9,800 acres, Cumberland is the largest and southernmost of Georgia's barrier islands. With it's unusual range of wildlife, beaches and maritime forest, Cumberland has been declared a National Park and a National Seashore  The Dungeness Ruins are the remains of a mansion built by Thomas Carnegie, brother and partner of steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Georgian Revival–style Plum Orchard is another Carnegie estate. The simple, 1-room First African Baptist Church, wedding place of John and Carolyn Kennedy, lies north. Wildlife includes loggerhead turtles and feral horses.  Here pristine maritime forests, undeveloped beaches and wide marshes whisper the stories of both man and nature. Natives, missionaries, enslaved African Americans and Wealthy Industrialists all walked here.
